Known as “the Heart of the Region,” Whitby is host to the Region of Durham Headquarters on Rossland Rd. It lies approximately 20 kilometers east of the Toronto border of Scarborough and is bordered on the west by Ajax, the east by Oshawa and the south by Lake Ontario. The Township of Scugog borders Whitby to the north. The northern parts of Whitby remain mostly rural with the exception of Brooklin, which has become a thriving bedroom community for Toronto commuters. Population in 2016 was listed as 128,377.

The Port of Whitby occupies the southern-most portion of town south of the 401 and houses the 400+ berth Whitby Marina, the Whitby Yacht Club, several condominium towers, the Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences, the Iroquois Park Sports Centre, the Whitby Abilities Centre and the popular Whitby Shores residential subdivision. Further intensification of this area is on-going.

Whitby is also home to the Durham District School Board and Trafalgar Castle School; an independent school for women that offers grades 5-12 in a University preparatory program.  The school first opened its doors in 1874!

During World War II, Whitby was the home to Camp X, a secret spy training facility established by Sir Williams Stephenson. While the buildings are now long gone, a monument was unveiled at the site in 1984, along the shores of Lake Ontario.

Whitby is known for its schools and sports. With over 24 elementary schools in the public board and 12 in the Catholic Board, it is well served for a rapidly expanding population. The Whitby Dunlops are the most famous claim to fame, having won the world ice hockey championship in 1958 at Oslo, Norway. Lacrosse is also prominent with the outstanding Brooklin Redmen Senior A lacrosse club as one of the most successful in Canadian sporting history. Whitby is also home to the Iroquois Park Sports Centre that features 6 ice pads, a swimming pool, 6 tennis courts, 5 ball diamonds, 3 batting cages, a skatepark, soccer pitch, restaurant and the Whitby Sports Hall of Fame. It is one of the largest, minor sports centres in North America.

Many Whitby residents are commuters to the GTA. Major employers include Gerdau Ameristeel, McGraw-Hill Ryerson, Lear Corporation, Patheon and the LCBO to name a few. It is a great community to raise a family!
