
Port Perry, with a population approaching 10,000 residents lies approximately 85 kilometers (53 miles) northeast of Toronto. It serves as the commercial and administrative seat for Scugog Township, with a population of 22,500 residents.
The main street features many shops, restaurants, cafes, galleries, bookstores and antique stores housed within beautiful Victorian Era buildings. It has become a tourist destination with its picturesque setting on Lake Scugog, one of the largest man-made lakes in Ontario.
The town flourishes with festivals throughout the summer including the Dragon Boat Races, RibFest, Roar By The Shore, the Mississauga First Nation Pow Wow, Streetfest and more. It boasts its own, craft brewery, Old Flame and its annual fall fair which has been running every Labour Day weekend for the past 150 years. Port Perry was incorporated as a village in 1871.
The area is home to many artisans and craftsman and features a yearly “studio tour” across Scugog Township. There are local farm markets and farms where visitors can pick their own, seasonal fruit. Fishing is also popular in Lake Scugog with a summer Bass tournament and ice-fishing in the winter. The Lake is part of the Trent Waterway Systems through the locks in Lindsay. The Lake is shallow but it boasts an abundance of fish species.
Port Perry also boasts a newly-renovated hospital and is well served by the medical community. The Great Blue Heron Casino, on Scugog Island is the area’s largest, private sector employer. Many residents do commute to both Toronto, York and other parts of Durham Region for employment.
