Clarington boasts a population of approximately 93,000 residents. It was only incorporated in 1973 with the merging of the towns of Newcastle and Bowmanville and the townships of Clarke and Darlington. Bowmanville is the largest community within the municipality and is home to the municipal offices. Clarington is made up of four larger communities; Bowmanville, Newcastle, Courtice and Orono and numerous rural communities.
Major employers include the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station and General Motors, along with many smaller manufacturing enterprises. Agriculture is a major factor in the surrounding countryside with Algoma Orchards and many independent farms. The area is also rich in artists and crafts people and the local communities host a plethora of festivals and fairs. It is an area rich in tradition and family!
Demographically, Clarington has one of the highest proportions of residents who speak English as their mother tongue in the entire GTA at 91.2%. There are many attractions in the area including Enniskillen, the birthplace of Samuel McLaughlin, the founder of General Motors Canada and the renowned Enniskillen General Store which opened its doors in 1840 and still operates today! Jungle Cat World and the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (formerly Mosport) add to the list.
Clarington is home to many commuters, both to Durham Region and beyond to Toronto. GO Transit is currently extending commuter train services from Oshawa to Bowmanville with a completion date of 2024. This would add 4 morning and 4 evening trains to and from Toronto each day.
