The Town of Ajax was only officially formed in 1974, along with the Region of Durham. It’s extensive waterfront park, along the Lake Ontario shoreline to the south, is absolutely beautiful and a crown gem for the Town.

In 1941 a large plant was constructed to provide shells and munitions during World War II. The Town was first established at this time as people from all over Canada came to work at the plant. By 1945 they had produced 40 million shells and employed over 9,000 people! The entire plant site comprise over 12 square kilometers. Ajax was thus named after the HMS Ajax, a British warship.

After the war the University of Toronto leased most of the space to accommodate the flood of returning soldiers from the war and by 1949, some 7,000 engineering students had received training there.

Ajax has grown rapidly since the 1980’s and is now a well-established bedroom community for Toronto. Multiculturalism has increased dramatically as many young, ethnic professionals have moved into the rapidly expanded northern end of town. The 2011 Census indicated a population of 109,600 and that figure is estimated to be 119,677 in 2016. Population growth has far exceeded the average for Ontario over the past 20 years. Education level is also high with 67% of the population have a post- secondary degree.

Major employers include Dupont, Volkswagon, Dowty Aerospace, AEG Bayly Engineering and Ajax Textile to name a few. The Ajax Pickering General Hospital recently merged with Centenary Health Ctr. In Scarborough to from the Rouge Valley Health System.

Ajax is very much a car town in that you’ll either need a car or a good mastery of transit to do your shopping. It is serviced by numerous plazas and shopping centres but you’ll be getting in your car to get anywhere, as services are spread out across different parts of town. Transportation is dominated by Highway 401 which slices through the town from east to west.

There exists a good diversity of housing accommodations including; post war construction, condominiums, hi-rise apartment rentals, townhomes and newer detached homes located in large subdivisions to the north near Taunton Road. You can commute to Toronto in a reasonably short period of time though traffic congestion has been on the increase with population growth.
